Flowchart 1: Returning or remitting ineligible contributions
This flowchart explains how to administer ineligible contributions in different scenarios.
If you received an ineligible monetary contribution but did not deposit it into the bank account, return the contribution to the contributor. No reporting is required.
If you received an ineligible non-monetary contribution but did not accept it, return the contribution to the contributor. No reporting is required.
For monetary and non-monetary contributions that were deposited or accepted:
- First, determine whether the contribution was used. A monetary contribution was used if the campaign bank account balance fell below the ineligible amount at any time after the contribution was deposited into the bank account.
- If the contribution was used, send a cheque for the ineligible amount to Elections Canada, payable to the Receiver General.
- If the contribution was not used and it can be returned to the contributor, return it to the contributor. Reporting is required.
- If the contribution cannot be returned to the contributor, send a cheque for the ineligible amount to Elections Canada, payable to the Receiver General.
