Regulatory Policy

Welcome to the digital hub for Elections Canada's regulatory policy, where you can find information about and links to our regulatory policy instruments.

These instruments—which are aligned with the Canada Elections Act (the Act) and the Electoral Integrity Framework—provide predictability, clarity and transparency on how the agency makes decisions and administers the Act. They explain how and when the Chief Electoral Officer may exercise discretion in administering the Act. They also show how Elections Canada maintains the integrity of the electoral process through its administrative choices.

Regulatory policy instruments explain the approach of Elections Canada to administering the Act. They do not, however, displace provisions of the Act.

As the regulatory policy function and its services evolve, or changes are made to the Act, we may update existing instruments or create new ones. Where appropriate, we consult with relevant stakeholders and elector groups who may be especially impacted by a policy instrument to ensure their perspectives are taken into account.
