Why is Elections Canada conducting surveys?
Surveys help us evaluate our performance, programs and services. We use the information to make improvements. The Chief Electoral Officer also uses the surveys to make recommendations to Parliament.
How do I know if a survey is legitimate?
The survey will clearly state that it is being conducted by, or on behalf of, Elections Canada. Participants are welcome to contact us at 1-800-463-6868 to confirm if the survey is really from us.
Elections Canada never contacts electors by phone during the election campaign period to complete a survey.
Is it mandatory to participate in Elections Canada surveys?
Participation in our surveys is voluntary. However, your participation is important. We want the results of our surveys to represent the entire population. So, it is important that those we contact to participate in a survey take the time to complete it.
The information gathered in our surveys has impacts on our programs and services. We want accurate information about voting in Canada. So, responses from people who don't vote are just as important as responses from people who do.
If you are invited to participate in more than one of our surveys, please complete them all. Each survey measures something different, so the information you provide in each one is important.
How will my personal information be protected?
Elections Canada takes your confidentiality seriously. Information will be collected, used and disclosed in accordance with the requirements of the Privacy Act.
Firms that collect data on our behalf must follow strict security requirements. Only staff with reliability security clearance can handle personal information. The firms must protect personal data and can face penalties for any breach of confidentiality.
If you are concerned about how your personal information is handled, you can file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Does Elections Canada ask about voting intentions?
Elections Canada will never ask you who you are voting for or which political party you support.
