Elections Canada Hosts Inaugural Advisory Board Meeting on
Federal Electoral System

Ottawa, Wednesday, December 18, 2013

The Elections Canada Advisory Board held two productive days of discussions at its inaugural meeting in Ottawa this week. The Advisory Board, announced by Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand in October, was formed to provide non-partisan advice on matters related to Canada's electoral system.

The Advisory Board, co-chaired by the Honourable Ian Binnie, former justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, and Ms. Sheila Fraser, former Auditor General of Canada, is composed of 13 prominent Canadians representing a wide range of fields, including political process, public service, law, media, community and academic leadership.

The board was provided with briefings on the subjects of governance, the regulatory framework, election operations and services to electors as well as preparations for the 42nd general election.

Mr. Mayrand was pleased with the discussions, noting: "We appreciate the time our board members have given to this initial phase of their work and look forward to the insights they will bring to the table as they consider ways the electoral system can be improved and modernized."

The mandate of the Advisory Board is to study and provide advice on matters related to Canada's electoral system, including the conduct of elections, electoral participation both by voters and political participants, the regulatory regime and electoral reform.

The first meeting took place on December 16 and 17 in Ottawa. The next meeting will occur in late spring 2014.
