Chief Electoral Officer's Report on Recommended Changes
to the Canada Elections Act Tabled in Parliament
OTTAWA, Thursday, June 10, 2010
- The Speaker of the House of Commons, the Honourable Peter Milliken, tabled in Parliament on June 9, 2010, the recommendations report following the October 14, 2008, general election, subsequent to its presentation to him by the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Marc Mayrand.
- The report, Responding to Changing Needs – Recommendations from the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Following the 40th General Election, proposes a number of recommendations designed to promote an efficient electoral process that is responsive to societal changes, while continuing to foster accessibility, integrity and public trust.
- The Canada Elections Act requires the Chief Electoral Officer to make recommendations for legislative improvements following a general election.
- The recommendations report, along with the Report of the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada on the 40th General Election of October 14, 2008 and the Report on the Evaluations of the 40th General Election of October 14, 2008, are available on Elections Canada's Web site.
"This report presents a series of recommendations that are aimed at providing better service to electors and modernizing Elections Canada's way of doing business," said Mr. Mayrand. "We look forward to engaging parliamentarians as they review this report and to sharing our views regarding how the proposed changes would strengthen the Canadian electoral process."
